• Microsoft Offers Public Beta of Windows 7

What’s this I hear, Microsoft decided to release the Windows 7 Beta to the average Joe public? You mean they actually are going to get user feedback before a major release of their newest operating system, and not just users who got it off bittorrent… This is the exact same release that was leaked onto the torrent sites about 2 weeks ago, Build number 7000.0.081212-1400. So if you got it there, you may not want to get it again.

Get your official copy here. Both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions are available for download there. Supposedly they are limiting it to 2.5 million copies, so get yours now.

The release of this beta caused so much traffic on their site that they had to upgrade their systems to provide better speeds. They hate BitTorrent so much that they would rather spend money on more servers than letting the community do all the work… How is it that they can do something smart then follow it up with doing something stupid?

  • Windows 7 Virtual Machine

After getting a hold of the recent 32-bit Windows 7 Pre-Beta build 6.1.6801.0 iso off one of the well known torrent search engines, I decided to try installing it as a virtual machine with VMware Server 2. After very little setup, I had a working Windows 7 virtual machine.

When you are asked what OS you are installing, select Windows Vista 32. After it is installed, install the vmware tools and you are all set. Unfortuantely the VMware video driver does not allow aero effects :( Surely that will come with time.

Here is a screen shot of the virtual machine:

If you wish to activate this distribution, you are in luck. There are a bunch of MAK’s (Multiple Activation Keys) available that can be used to fully activate this version of Windows 7.  You can find those keys here.
